In Response To: Northern Rockies Paddlefest - nobody died! (Shawn Baker)

Glad you had good days despite the weather. Tried to make it down but ended glassing Doug's deck instead.
take care
don
The Paddlefest this year was rather well attended, given inclement weather.
: Rain, sleet, mild winds, snow, sunshine, clouds...we pretty much had it
: all, except for big surfable-wave-producing winds.

: 9 retailers on the beach up from only 4 last year. One of the retailers who
: had less than "responsible" staff had a new guy this year who
: was pretty impressive. He was on capsize victims and doing T-rescues
: faster than you could say, "hey, would you look at that!"

: Need to run downtown and give him an 'attaboy'...he should be a great asset
: for them. This is the same retailer whose sales-droid told a buddy of mine
: last year before a March 38*F water paddle on Flathead, "whoa, man,
: cool!"...never ever saying, "that's neat...but do you really
: realize how cold that water is?"

: I think there were 7 or 8 capsizes on Saturday...most of them somewhat
: serious paddlers who were really edging their boats...not "tire
: kickers" who went "oops!" Nobody was in the water very
: long...a huge improvement from past years.

: Tried the Foster Legend...it felt too deep! Fast and edgy, though.

: Ed, nobody else in the world fits your seat...you're skinnier than every
: other person who sat in your old Romany!

: I did a Greenland rolling demo Sunday afternoon that was pretty well
: attended. Got lots of "nice dress" comments about my new tuilik.

: Dan Yuhas put on the tuilik and the Explorer and hit a sculling roll!!! Way
: to go, Dan!

: After loading up yesterday afternoon, Demetri, Bobbie, Anne, and I paddled up
: through Bigfork Bay and paddled the bottom of the Swan under the bridge.
: The river is about 1,400cfs...it was 4,400cfs last year during Whitewater
: Festival...the river didn't look as scary (nor the docks) as last year at
: the higher flow...having a sea kayak under my butt that I was more used to
: didn't hurt either.

: We practiced some eddy turns down behind the Playhouse and basked in the hot
: afternoon sun that finally arrived! Anne capsized once doing a
: peelout...she got into the current fine, then relaxed her edge a bit too
: soon, and capsized upstream. We quickly got her back into her boat, then
: worked on some eddy turns where the eddyline was fatter.

: A nice weekend with some wierd weather!

: Shawn
