It's a good example of how things can turn ugly in a hurry. Sounds like you made a good call to turn around and bail.

Like Shawn, I question the wisdom of taking anyone on such water without immersion protection. I also wonder about your statement to the effect that if they had been properly clad, you would have continued. It seems to me that turning around was the best option, regardless of other factors. The wind/water conditions were overwhelming some of your group and immersion gear wouldn't have changed that.

Again, David, thanks for sharing. There is much to be learned from this incident. I'm glad to hear that everything worked out well.
