Well, no. Though I have thought some about it.
An article in Sea Kayaker about the couple who did most of the upper left coast within the last year of issues mentioned they tried it with the kind of single string kites that you can stuff in a bag. I have done some kite ariel photography with those kites and have thought of trying it with the kayak...
But thus far, my sense of self preservation has reigned over my adventourous spirit. I know I could launch the kite from the cockpit. I know I could tie it off to a harness or cleat. What I don't know is how I would steer. I don't have a kayak with a rudder and would need to steer with my paddle.
I don't think it would take much of a kite at normal 10-15 k shore side breezes to pull the kayak at hull speed... maybe a 3-4 square foot kite. (more like $30 instead of $600.) My 12 square foot kite would pull way up at planing speed since it gives me a maybe 30-40 pound pull at those wind speeds, and I do not look forward to thinking about controling a kayak up at those speeds...
Suggested kite for the XTREME experimenters might be the flowform 4:
Also learning how to do this without a good back-up and support/rescue team would not be a good idea... Not a good idea at all.
