Greg,
Just a word of thanks for new Video Clips of the Standard Roll and the Side Scull. I've been rolling for about 6 months now and have had a reliable roll (at least in a practice situation) since then. But, when I saw the clip of the Standard Roll, I realized that I my paddle sweep was a little bit off and I have been waiting all week to get the boat on the water to try to fix it. I spent the afternoon on the water ... and, there was a distinct improvement. I did better non-extended-paddle rolls than ever. I also managed a couple of passable side sculls, on both sides. I'm sure they weren't pretty to keep the face out of the water (even on the recovery). The clips of the advanced techniques are pretty cool, but at least for where I am at now, the basic techniques are a more applicable.
Thanks again for the useful video clips.
-John D.: Robert,
: Having the proper mental image will make learning to roll much easier, but
: expect for it to take awhile to learn the muscular movements that are
: required. As a case in point, even when you can roll fine on one side, it
: still takes time to learn the roll on the other side.: I'm not trying to discourage you, just don't get frustrated if success does
: not come immediately. How long it takes you to learn has no bearing on how
: good a roller you will eventually become. No matter how quickly or slowly
: you get your first roll, it takes practice to make your roll an effective
: rescue technique. Persistence and motivation is the key. It sounds as if
: you are amply motivated and if you are determined to learn, you will!: Once you are rolling, try to see how slowly you can perform a roll. This is
: an excellent way to hone your skills. Also consider having someone
: videotape your roll, and compare it to the video clip from Greenland. This
: can be very useful for discovering flaws and improving your technique.: Greg Stamer
