to hatch or not

I'm finishing my Pygmy Coho and am having second thoughts on cutting hatches. Do I really need them? Is there some other way to get flotation? Is it really inconvient not to have them on expended trips? If I use air bags should I install d-rings (or something else) to secure them? I've never used a sea sock, is that the best alternative to hatches? Thanks for your comments.
