Technically the existing statutes only use the word "canoe" in the requirement to wear PFD's from October through May. While most people interpret this to mean kayaks as well, it does not actually apply to kayaks in a strict interpretation.

Of course this begs the questions: what is a "canoe" exactly. My father has a nice aluminum Grumman kayak he sometimes paddles with a double bladed paddle.
