You can really learn a lot from books and videos and anecdotal information on the Internet. BUT...this is after learning that all-important first roll, and having an idea of the body mechanics involved.
These other tools are great in the practice phases--after your instructor sends you home with your new roll, and you're working on making it more reliable.
