Pete, this one is a little hard to explain, but I found that when at rest I am not really upside down but rather off to the side and slightly submerged. My el cheapo MTI pfd has a lot of floatation around the shoulders, and if I extend myself out of the cockpit (my neo/nylon skirt is still attached) by releasing my grip on the seat and knee pads, I can come close enough to the surface where I can breathe through the snorkel. After I calm down and think about what I need to do, I’ll go under, reseat myself, get a good knee grip, set up, and try again. Of course I am usually taking on water in the boat, but this only makes it easier for me to remain near the surface. Without extending myself out of the boat, the leverage isn’t there to bring me all that close to the surface.
This isn’t anything new. I can’t remember where I saw it, but there was a picture of a kayaker that who extended himself out of his capsized kayak, and was able to place both hands on the bottom of his kayak, and keep his head and shoulders above water indefinitely.
