You will hear no argument from me about the benefit of learning to roll with an instructor. John Lull clearly stated that in his book, and I admire the man and his skills greatly. I only thought it helpful if I shared my story with Pete (and others who may be in the same situation) because he was considering teaching himself to roll out of necessity. Pete was writing about purchasing various gadgets to ease his efforts, and I thought I was sharing with him some of the tricks I used which ultimately led to success. For Tim, and others who might catch this, I am also a “Friend of Bill”. Furthermore, I was unemployed at the time and my pride was at a low. But, hey, John Lull did write a really good book.
When it comes time for my wife to try rolling, my plan is to surprise her with some pre-paid lessons from a female instructor that I’ve heard about.
On the lighter side, because of this, I became really adept at other self rescues. Left alone in the water, I was able to get pretty good at getting back in my boat using the paddle float re-enter and roll, swimming to shore with a swamped boat, etc. The penalty (other than loss of pride) for a failed roll was probably higher than one would pay with an instructor. As my old chief surveyor used to say in the mines, “Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”. It was heck having to travel deep underground to do some surveying, only to realize you left the tape back on the surface.
I do see how my anecdote could be interpreted other ways, and I would have no objection if it were removed from this board.
