: Actually I do race and more than once I've wished I could've stuck to my diet
: and lost those 10 lbs! Our winter racing series is never less than an hour
: - up to 2-1/2 hrs long. Since I race a 30lb outrigger, those 10 lbs would
: be a bigger % of the total weight that if I was paddling something
: heavier. I've figured that 10 fewer pounds for one of my outrigger races
: would translate to almost 200 yards - definitely significant at the end of
: a race! While weight does make a difference the biggest difference a few pounds will make is pyschological. An hour and a half into a 2 1/2 hour race, your feeling bad and you start thinking about those extra few pounds and you wish you didn't have them along. Before you know it you have yourself convinced that is why the other guy just pulled away, so trying harder really wouldn't make a difference, so you might as well give up and just try to enjoy the rest of the race.
Unfortunately, races are usually won or lost due to the engine. While the boat makes a difference, it probably isn't the difference between winning and losing.
