: light boat.While this is certainly true, most of the maneuverability of a surf boat is due to it's short length. Would you rather a 40# 12' boat or a 30# 17' boat?
The hull design is also key. For example, Nick's 18' Night Heron is much more maneuverable than most of the 15'-16' boats I've paddled. The 19', 65#+ fiberglass Recluse that I used to own was much easier to turn than my 40# skin boat. It seems to me that weight is really a secondary consideration in the maneuverablity of a kayak.
