Brad,
Regarding the role of the back line: if nothing else, in the unfortunate instance that all else fails (rack and bowline) and the whole mess takes off, then at least the stern line might give the driver behind you a critical second or two to respond.
On my boats, I often use a cable to lock the boats to the truck while travelling. It is placed to do double duty as a stern line. It runs from a security loop on the back deck to a tie-down loop in the bed. The boat will have to come apart before this line breaks.
Mike.
: Sounds pre-9/11--now he'd 'probly think it was a bomb. It doesn't sound like
: you've experienced collision with your setup (that' good!), and how your
: end-lines are oriented isn't mentioned. I'm really hoping someone will
: respond who's used endlines both diagonally forward like the catalog
: pictures. By the way, the stern rope's mostly only good for keeping the
: car from accelerating out from under the boat, or, somewhat, alleviating
: crosswind. But it don't do much else--like an acquaintance of mine who was
: going 60 mph into a 60 mph headwind out in CO found out (after the front
: bolts pulled THROUGH THE ROOF! of his van, then snapped the front rope
: (1/4") as the whole mess lifted of the roof, the rear rope did hold
: for a moment as the sad assembly of rack and boats ground down the road).
: By the way, all the boats stayed stuck to the rack with their straps! He
: now travels with 1/2" diagonal front ropes. Be careful!
