Exactly, all those ratchets are made from some inadequate pot metal and don't stand abuse or the effects of saltwater for long. They're made overseas in some sweat shop, qa/qc is poor, thread is inferior, materials substandard, design is mostly lame. Plain fact, try paddling every other day in the ocean and you, too, will see the wondrous claims of the yotz manufacturers erode by corrosion, to fail under stress. Next stop, try to get those manufacturers to own up and replace their POS. No such luck...after shipping it back at your expense and a month of it sitting somewhere, your constant badgering will eventually get an opinion that you have abused it (by use). So sorry Charlie...NEXT!
Currently we've busted the three NSIs (lousy support, too) and moved on to the equally bad Bomber. Within months we removed by twisting with pliars, the pot metal ratchets (that slip under load), and devised this Rube Goldberg web adjustment system.
To be fair and defend the manufacturers I don't think they ever dreamed of a person who would use their backband for paddling in the ocean 15-25 miles every other day. I know whitewater is rough...(I would call it suicidal myself), but it is not saltwater...the nastiest stuff around.
I seriously think that a better system can be built with thought and insight:
1. spending the time to finely tune a shape of seat and back then cast a fiberglass shape like Shwan and Ross have discussed and shown
2. carving and grinding away patiently a minicell seat like Sage is doing these days, fine-tuning down to the nth degree
3. making your own back band like we have done (so strong that I busted a cheek plate screwing around)I'm redoing my rear bulkhead and attachments to try out a streamlined idea...it's nowhere as strong and resistant as the Shawn and Ross seats, but might stand up for a year or so. Time will tell.
