If this thread seems like a Shakespeare play( Much Ado...), I have a couple more thoughts.
The forward stroke is the most frequntly used stroke, and yet it is the stroke least likely to be mastered.Feedback might be the issue. When a paddler is working on, say, a bow rudder or sweep stroke, a change in shaft angle, torso rotation, etc, may produce a marked and observable improvement in the next stroke. This is an intrinsic reward that is hard to ignore. But forward stroke? Sea kayaks are so easy for paddlers at 2-3kn and short distances that it is easy to use just about any forward stroke and make it work. The innefficiency may not show up unless distance or speed goes up; and untill that happens, the paddler is cementing in place an innefficient muscle action pattern.
It is rewarding to practice a sideslip and get an improvement in minutes. But practicing a forward stroke requires hours of concentration. Not much fun for most of us.
