Yes!
After training to use my torso muscles, they get less tired than they used to. Firing them up completely, though, still burns a lot of fuel.
Not using them at all makes my arms (and body) really tired and also burns lots of fuel, so simply putting the torso in low gear helps a great deal.
Shawn
: I also find that using less arm and more torso makes me go faster. However,
: going faster is harder work than going slow and when I want to go slow, it
: is more comfortable and relaxing when I use my arms more. I can not
: comfortably maintain my same "efficient" technique when I want
: to just ease along slowly. In other words the most efficient slow stroke
: may actually be "arm paddling". Why fire up the big torso
: muscles when all you want to do is putter along. You need to match your
: stroke with what you are trying to do.: For long distance paddling when I don't need slow down to match the speed of
: others in the group, I find I can cover the most ground with the least
: effort by using moderate torso rotation with some bending of my elbows.
: The faster I go, the less I bend my elbows.
