I've heard other arguments that it isn't the torso rotation per se that is so important, but simply engaging the torso muscles.
I know that by using torso rotation and engaging "good form", I can quickly pass my paddling partners using less effort. (especially when they're arm paddling)

: It is a good idea to question any technique that says "never". I
: think it is well worthwhile trying paddling for some distance without
: bending your elbows. It forces the use of other muscles which you may not
: bring into play otherwise. In doing so you can get a feel for how they
: work for you. Your reaction may be, "wow, that feels good" or
: you may find it just doesn't work that well for you. After practicing
: different techniques for a while you can begin to develop a technique that
: is comfortable and effective for you. If you find this involves bending
: your elbows, go for it.
