Hi Brian,
Fortunately at the time when I did my Versapak battery installation I worked for Black & Decker. I had access to field returned product which made for a wide selection of available parts. I found the best contact setup was the dual battery compartment from a Versapak Electric Broom Stick. Putting two of them back to back I had my four cell contact arrangement which slipped easily into a plastic jar with a gasketed watertight lid. I brought silicone insulated wires out the side of the jar and sealed them with RTV. I used the Versapak Gold sticks which are nickel hydride batteries. They hold a greater charge and last much longer than the standard Versapak nickel cadmium battery.
If you have access to a Black & Decker Factory outlet they may have returned or damaged product that you can obtain at a reduced price. I am not sure if B&D still sells the Electric Broom in their line. Regarding the Versapak Charger stand they sell a dual stick version which is better than even their 4 stick charger. You can buy this separately.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Paul: I bought some Versapak batteries on sale with the intention of doing what you
: did, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Can you give me some details
: of how you rigged the batteries? Specifically, what did you use for
: contacts? Any tips on charging them? I have one of their safety lights
: with a built-in charger, but it only takes one battery at a time.
