When surfing I've burried the front hatch on some relativly small waves. Once you get the bow under it's pretty easy to get water up past the rear of the front hatch 
I've never gotten water in through the hatches - it's always been through the bulkhead (I think they are ABS plastic) or through one deck fitting. The leaks were at the top of the bulkhead so I only noticed it when inverted
