a swede that fishes

In Response To: Thanks for a very informative post, Tom. (Pamela)

Hi Pamela,
I am glad you found the post informative. Keep in mind it is just my thought on skegs and is not necessarily accurate. What one thinks to be true and what is true are two different things. As far a swede and fish form i tend not to get too caught up in the debates between the two camps. Likewise the discussions of the effect of a flat bottomed boat and a boat with a slight, mild or pronounced v bottom. For me there are to many variable involved. a flat bottomed boat that is 24 or 25 inches wide and one that is 21 inches are dramatically different in how they handle even though they are both flat.
the people that design kayaks have many places they can tweak the design to get the boat to do what they want. I try to feel how the boat handles overall. How it paddles for me--what i am looking for in a boat. If most designers were up front i think they would admit they are surprised with how some of their designs paddle. Fluid dynamics is difficult for experts (and i would put very few kayak designers in the expert category) at best. How a boat feels for you is the important issue.
with my last post on skegs let me say up front i am not pro or con rudder. I think they have their place. Especially in long trips like Paul Caffin did. A woman paddler i know is thinking of going from a boat with a skeg to a boat with a rudder for a variety of reasons. The important point is that she is making an informed decision (if she does make the change) on the type of paddling she wants to do now. It is amazing that the people i know that like kayaks without rudders will give her a hard time. she is a good paddler, it is her time, it is her boat, she knows what she want to do, she should paddle what she wants to because she is making an informed decision.
