Lake currents

: You said there was wind and current so you were in a river?
I was in Toronto harbour, which is surrounded by islands except for large eastern and western shipping channels. There are currents everywhere -- even in what seem to be quiet lagoons in the islands. The current is particularly noticeable near the shipping channels.
If so you were in
: confused conditions so pulling skeg up was the right thing to do to
: increase manouverabilty so you could bob and weave with the everchanging
: conditions. As Ed explained so well any good touring kayak should
: weathercock thus making it easy to maintain a heading upwind.Down wind you
: drop skeg to make it leecock so it wants to head downwind without
: broaching or rounding up.Beam winds you give it half skeg, three quarter
: skeg or whatever to keep it tracking straight across the
: wind.Practise, practise and practice and patterns will emerge, that's the
: fun of paddling in rough conditions, flat water is boring.I hadn't thought of using a half-skeg or quarter-skeg. That's an extremely helful suggestion.
Thank you.
