Is secondary stability a myth?

Nick and others who know boat building...maybe you can help. Is the concept of secondary stability a myth? Is there any direct evidence that narrower kayaks or other features which enable the boat to ride the waves more effectively increase stability? Assume I have read many theory papers on the diffs. between primary and secondary stability, but in the real world, isn't a wider boat always a more stable boat? Any evidence to the contrary?
For the record, I have been taught that there are boats with good primary, and boats with good secondary stability. But is this real, or just an extrapolation of research findings on hull stability, with no real testing to support it?
