: proficient with them.I can attest to that. I'm not at all proficient with a stick, but I've paddled side-by-side with those who are, and believe me, they aren't sacrificing anything. I borrowed Don Beale's paddle outside the surf zone, and had a hard time keeping up with him (he had another spare GP, and didn't want to use my Euro!). I swapped back when we went through the surf, but he did just fine with a stick. It's definitely the paddler, not the paddle.
Granted there are compromises here and there (as with any type of gear), but by and large, they don't amount to as much as skill and experience.
