snipAssuming we are talking about the same "convulsive effort to breathe", I can attest to the fact that it is absolutely uncontrollable. I could not breathe once reaching the surface and for a significant time afterward. However, I was able to prevent water inhalation, which may not be true for everyone exposed to this situation.
