Personally Pam, I think some of the Harborfront crew are getting a little too racing style in their paddling, and I don't see most of us holding up to our ideals which we teach in class. This has lead me to believe more and more that each person has their own paddling style, but that will come after 2-5 years of practice. I agree strongly with Jed Luby on the need for structure at your stage and to preserve structure as a reference point thereafter. But the comments on this discussion are broadening my perspective, and I haven't seen anyone hold that straight arm catch when the students aren't looking. So my feeling is that more bend in the arm is still compatible with ab power in the stroke.
In a recent forward stroke coaching session, I had a vivid off-water
: demonstration of how torso rotation shifts the catch forward. The coach
: told me to sit on the floor and 'paddle' without using torso rotation. My
: 'catch' was marked on the floor with a coin. Then I tried the foward
: stroke with torso rotation and my 'catch' moved forward 6 or 8 inches.: The coach also provided a good model for non-mathematical people like me who
: can't visualize 120 degrees and don't dare look at anything except the
: traffic in this very busy harbour. I was told to keep my arms straight
: through most of the stroke, just softening them toward the end.: Pamela
