Maybe not dogma but it seems to help

: In a recent forward stroke coaching session, I had a vivid off-water
: demonstration of how torso rotation shifts the catch forward. The coach
: told me to sit on the floor and 'paddle' without using torso rotation. My
: 'catch' was marked on the floor with a coin. Then I tried the foward
: stroke with torso rotation and my 'catch' moved forward 6 or 8 inches. It sounds like you have a very good coach. Someone that knows just how to get the point across to you. I find myself teaching my students to concentrate or the catch primarily. Once the blade is in the water transfer attention to the dry blade, moving it as far forward as possible by driving with the ribs. At the very end of your reach, plant the blade in the water such that you are still pushing the blade forward during the catch. This seems to minimize pulling with the opposite arm and helps them to see the real benefit of torso rotation (extended catch). The opposite arm will naturally lift the wet blade from the water somewhere around the hip.
: The coach also provided a good model for non-mathematical people like me who
: can't visualize 120 degrees and don't dare look at anything except the
: traffic in this very busy harbour. I was told to keep my arms straight
: through most of the stroke, just softening them toward the end. That's an accurate way to describe it. In the beginning, I am very strict about rigid arms in order for my students to "feel" the torso rotation. Once they feel the power of rotation I relax my rigid arm rule. You can lead a horse to water . . . .
They will use what feels best to them in the real world and that's fine. My job is just to teach them about their options. The challenge comes with trying to teach someone something as unatural as torso rotation after they've developed muscle memory about arm paddling.Jed
