Last week we had some picnickers at a local lake enjoyingd a warm day. An inpromptue, exhuberant cannon ball jump into the water (38 degrees)caused immediate panic reaction and gasping. A few seconds of flailing and thrashing and he was gone. Found later in 15 feet of water a short distance form shore.

The next day while teaching an ocean rescue class (using dry suits), we watched other paddlers leaving shore in shorts and t-shirts under blue skies with the same cold water temps. Most of them were probably aware of the drowning on the local news but didn't learn anything. : (

Glad your experience worked out okay.
