I like that analogy, I don't have any great expertise in any field,,the closest I got was in bike racing and even that was marginal compared to those natural athletes that could intuitively put their whole body behind a movement before even beginning refinements in technique, for most beginners that seems to be the first challenge in paddling. I've seen folks without the "proper torso rotation" but their entire body was anchoring the blade so they could get a sense of glide going. With those folks that were all arms and no anchor in the abdomen focusing on rotation still didn't get it going since the twist occured way too late.
It seems that getting people to "wind up" before the blade hits the water works better than simply saying twist left/right because they have to become aware of the center and anchor BEFORE the work happens, it helps to shorten the stroke.ACA instruction is extreme and simple on the torso rotation idea, from what I've seen they can be spotted 100yds away,,"ok,,this is exagerated, after 5minutes you'll find what's 'natural' but think about....."
after a long while people start discovering that what's natural for lifting heavy objects or climbing trees isn't natural for paddling.
