straight arms doesn't make sense,,,but there is a big variation in how much rotation folks use,,my sense the focus is exagerated compared to other places one can make improvements. Personally I like to glide and pause a bit before hitting the water,,then there's dragging ones butt home at the slow and steady pace with elbows low,,or whatever else moves you, either way letting the water flow to the inside edge (next to the kayak) of the blade seems to work at low and high efforts...I'm going to have to learn high efforts though before I attempt to speak with "authority".
recent suggestions/visualizations are a stretching feeling between the shoulder blades with a band of steel going from hand to hand across the back. Relaxing thighs so a push follows through the hamstrings (I know muscles don't push but it helps me relax muscles not needed). Imagining finger tips along the edges of the blade tips helps to relax hand grip so feather/blade angle is right.
