Certification

: 5 levels of sea kayaking, 1 flatwater and then instructor's levels to teach,
: yes 11. I usually refer to the 5 level system to keep it simple. Are you
: CRCA cert. Don? Haven't trained with you, but maybe you did yours at White
: Squall. Always eager to contact others in the progression.: From what I understand, don't quote me, other provinces like BC haven't
: really accepted CRCA cert. Not sure the CRCA badge transfers across
: provinces at this point, would like to be corrected. My certification is all canoeing -- RCABC flatwater instructor, moving water instructor, tripping instructor and ocean paddler level 4 with advanced course in rodeo in a play boat. CRCA has granted equivilent certification so I could also teach in Ontario -- that went quite smoothly but that has only been readily available for the past year or so.
My only kayak instruction has been self taught adapting the canoe strokes as best I can and an abreviated period (about 10 minutes) with Shawn Baker -- but it was an excellant 10 minutes. Not sure about transferring the other way but it should be becoming smoother. The new RCABC executive seems far more open to this. Not likely to see many CRCA courses in the interior of BC but we do hope to get Shawn into this area this year -- I don't care about the certification, I just enjoy becoming more proficient. The problem with the CRCA is the number of levels which makes it almost a full time job to get certified. As one who has required certification to make his living, it has seemed like a cash grab. However, in some ways it is easier for someone to access a low level coursse with the CRCA. RCABC is more concentrated, more is pushed at you but the level of instruction meets my needs. That said, the CRCA has good info and produces good people and has done a good job of setting national standards and raising the profile of messing about in boats -- I just prefer BC's. I should also mention I am a big fan of the current CRCA president and the work she has done on inclusion -- it has been admirable.
the soap box has been put away
