Pete, after 30minutes of aggressive paddling you develop pain? just out of curiosity is there a warm up period preceding that 30 minutes?
I don't race nor have the conditioning for it, but my short experience in cycling in my twenties told me I had to be warmed up for at least 30 minutes before I could put out large amounts of energy without soreness or increasing recovery time after a ride, to say nothing about the ability to pile on successive weeks of training without injury. The kind of injury that leads to chrondomalacia and tendinitis or surgery.
You can work yourself towards injury by lifing a sack of concrete wrong,,or moving a paddle through the water. Get it right before something worse happens. Search around for other resources, instruction, Brent Reitz video (racing technique may not necessarily be your technique but the elements of protecting your wrists are there). But in the mean time STOP the agressive paddling until YOU figure out something different, piling on the agreesive efforts is one more step closer to having to stop because injury stops you. There's a line between soreness and recovery that can lead to strength or injury. Pain on the otherhand is a straightline to injury. We're not talking about the pain a conditioned athlete goes through.
Decrease the intensity and increase the duration of your paddling, during the duration find cues to your speed that are reliable, I assume that speed matters otherwise you wouldn't be "paddling aggressively", using those cues play with different parts of the stroke while keeping a steady breathe, each day play with a different part of the stroke at even efforts that can be sustained WITHOUT discomfort or much exertion. After a while from paddling longer distances you will start to find more efficient ways of moving your body. Getting together with instruction will probably cut to a fraction of the time the learning curve to developing an efficient stroke that doesn't cause pain.
"doc, it hurts when I do this",,,,"don't do that, that'll be $150 please"
