: It seems the ideal jacket comes with latex wrist/neck gaskets and costs an
: arm and a leg. I've found a very reasonably priced jacket (NRS PowerHouse
: Jacket) that subsitutes neoprene for the gaskets. I want to get a jacket
: so that when I roll little to no water will seep inside. Do neoprene
: closures keep the water out? Do I really need to pay so much for decent
: protection? I don't care if I get a little wet (I am in a WETsuit), but I
: don't want to be soaked from a roll either. Ideas, advice?Hi,
I would consider cutting my personal paddling garment when I'm aware exactly of which features I'll need.
Perhaps this is unrealistic, but we may admit:Most of us seem to be dissatisfied with the market's offer, whether it's for technicality or cost reasons.
Such a choice appears to be very personal, depending on everyone's pratice and paddling season and area.
Many experienced paddlers, including teachers, have suggested relevant improvements ( wrist gaskets, how to tuck a thick garment into the tuiliq or coaming, etc.) here on paddling wear.
Some of such garments' components (nylon cloth and straps, floatation) seem to be available and affordable.
Those garments: jackets or peeafdees are quite simply cut, not requiring haute couture skills.
Winters are long and cold in the Northern hemisphere. This wouldn't take more time than cutting and stitching a batsail.
So, why not try the do-it-yourself approach? Is this realistic? Would Gore-Tex be the problem?
Just guessing.Eric
