There was very little in print when I started kayaking, but the most useful book that I found over the years was John Urbans Whitewater Handbook. I would alternate between reading the book and trying things on the water. The information was very simple and accurate. The important thing is to turn all the conceptual information into solid experience on the water.
"Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from exercising poor judgement"
