What is the technique to do an 180 degree turn when flatwater racing.
CLC North Bay; no rudder or skeg.
154 lbs, fit, old, new to racing, not yet fully comfortable with 20" wide Kayak.
1 to 10 miles, 1 or more 180 degree turns, local non serious, normally calm water.
My current technique:
1. Initiate right turn by right rudder .
2. Lean left
3. Paddle on left only using sweep strokes.
3a.change grip on paddle to get longer sweep.
3b.skim back of left blade along water on return as brace against leaning too far left.
The exertion of paddling makes it difficult to maintain a constant lean angle.
I try to lean far to sharpen the turn but lean angle becomes unstable and I have to flatten out or tip. If I don't lean steep then I lose time with a large radius turn.
So- What is the correct technique?
