I don't have time to check out the whole thread, so here's my 2 cents.
Yes, glasses have to be wiped, but I find I prefer to have eye protection over my contacts since, over the years, I have had several washed out by wind-driven rain or spray. If I roll with contacts, I have to work by feel. In a dive mask, contacts are superior.

I've made a number of passages in strong winds and rain. I could make out the compass, so I was okay to hold course, and occasional waves would hit me in the face, clearing the pesky droplets. I also use my glove or a bandanna to take a quick swipe between paddle strokes. It's not ideal, but it will do.

As far as laser surgery goes, I'm old enough to need reading glasses. I can fake it by wearing disance prescription only, and then pushing my glasses up for careful chart reading. My distance vision is so bad my far point of uncorrected focus is about six inches away. If I had laser surgery, I would lose this capability. I would need to have reading glasses for close tasks, especially in poor light.

With a visual handicap, you have to make adaptations as best you can. So far I am reducing contact use to nearly nil in the kayak and holding off on laser surgery.

To hold the glasses on, I use a non-elastic cord with a cordlock on it so I can snug it up quite hard when necessary. So far, it has withstood roll practice. A spare set of glasses goes somewhere handy, like in pfd pocket or emergency kit.
