Find advice on all aspects of kayaking and using small boats on big water

: ...I can do all of those things simply by sticking my spare Greenland paddle
: under the deck rigging, using it as an outrigger. I guess I don't need
: sponsons.

(assuming your greenland stick is fairly long and bouyant, i guess that would be "predictably stabilizing the yak by offset floatation")

brian, i essentially agree with all your points on this issue. Not when in the river, but when on the ocean or lake i have carried 2 paddlefloats for several yrs since i started thinking about this issue. As is, they allow me many ways to stabilize or be of use. simple, cheap, easy to store, lots of flexibility, easy to lend, and their inflated volume is equal to sponsons.

i'm not perfect, and my skills are not perfect, so for me its a no-brainer.
