Find advice on all aspects of kayaking and using small boats on big water

Re: No, but thats not the question.

As someone who has been "quoted" by Mr Ingram in his marketing, I don't like his marketing methods. I got a call one night from an anti spam dude who threatened to bring down my web site because my name appeared in spam sent by Mr. Ingram. So, I don't like the man.

But, the question is: "Are sponsons any good?" If you know their limitations, they can serve a legitimate purpose. I don't see them as being too useful as a "rescue" device, but just because they have limitations doesn't mean the idea is bad. Rolls don't work if you paddle breaks (barring a handroll), paddlefloats don't work if they rip, PFDs don't work if your unconsious, etc.

I've heard of people using sponsons to make their boat more stable while they sleep on the water. They can give added security when a paddler is in capacitated. I can imagine other uses for them.

I don't own any and don't intend to buy any, but I don't look down my nose at anyone who likes them.

As far as some of their limitations, I think some of them could be eliminated with a better design.

: As for the usefulness of Sea Wings sponsons, they have the following
: shortcomings: - The boat has to be custom rigged for them. That means that
: they cannot be readily interchanged among boats and paddlers. How many
: people do you know who have their boats rigged for sponsons? Anyone? In a
: situation with a disabled paddler, you'd be better off to stick a spare
: paddle through the deck rigging and put a paddle float on each blade for
: stability.

: - Unless you carry them inflated on-deck (try THAT sometime), they are MUCH
: slower than other rescue methods. Feathercraft has a video in which they
: demonstrate a sponson rescue and it takes ~3 minutes to inflate and
: install them. That's about twice as long as a paddle float rescue and many
: times as long as a re-enter and roll.

: - They don't work in rough water. Making a kayak more stable in rough
: conditions - the place where rescues are most likely - makes it more
: likely to be re-capsized by waves. Tim has ZERO understanding of wave
: dynamics and has re-written the laws of physics to suit his needs. Don't
: believe any of it.

: - The price is ridiculous. A pair of boat fenders and all the materials you
: need to rig them would cost well under half the price of Sea Wings. Better
: yet, just get a second paddle float for $25.00.
