: the product rejection? How many have tried them for self rescue?

You are missing the point. By the time a person becomes adept at using a paddle float for self-rescue they have developed a few other essential SKILLS, like bracing, a sculling brace, re-entry and roll for example so the FOCUS is no longer on EQUIPMENT but on SKILLS. And hopefully the experience practicing ANY rescue or equipment will expand that person EXPERIENCE so as to not rely on a back-up device in place of judgement or skills.
If a person has the bad social JUDGEMENT to promulgate a product through idiotic logic and fear mongering "death from instructors teaching rolling" then the FOCUS is no longer on the product but FEAR. I don't buy on fear.

You don't need a reason to not buy them, you've got them and like them.

I could see situations where they might be useful, but not as a method for allaying fear.
