You and I are (literally) in the same boat. I just received the Kid-Yak plans from Glen-L, which I will give my son for his seventh birthday this month. He loved helping me last year with stitching (I don't let him near epoxy or much sanding) my CLC Mill Creek. He and I had some great times paddling it together, but it's really a one person craft.

I was able to find someone who had built one, and here's what he sent in reply to my questions:

"It will hold up to about a 100 lb child - I am finding mine very useful in teaching my son balance - not a fast boat, but then, I don't think I want a fast one for an 8 year old myself."

As for the plans and instructions, if you've built a boat, you should be able to build this. (But CLC's instructions seem much better.)

Nick - I've seen a few postings about making kayaks longer. Do you think I could make it last longer, i.e., as my son grows heavier, by adding up to a foot to the middle? Thank you.
