Kayak and Canoe Design Bulletin Board

shortened kayak

Hello to all. I was hoping somebody could tell me if it is possible to take the plans for an 18 ft. Cape Charles and shorten them by half, to around 9 or 10 feet. I taped up a mock up of cardboard in my living room the other day and it looks like there might be enough foot/leg room (I am just under 6ft). I want to know if something that small would be sufficient to carry someone up to 160 pounds. Someone recently posted a 'formula' for calculating a hull's displacement, but I can't find it now. This thing would never be paddled on anything but local lakes/ponds and I just want to know because I might want to put a second boat together quickly and cheaply for the rest of the family (I am building one of Nick's Great Auks). Thanks, Kelly
