Kayak Design Math Pointers?

I am thinking about starting an open source programming project that will be able to do some basic kayak design. Nothing too complicated, if I could do what "BEARBOAT" can do, that would be great.
Anyway, I don't have a huge background in engineering, but if I can find a good book on a subject, I usually can figure something out. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction, I'm looking for books or articles about the math behind calculating and drawing fair curves, minimizing surfaces, etc...kayak design math. I've found articles about 'theory', length, rocker, etc...I'm looking for 'hard math'.
Basically, I'm learning to program on c++ on Linux, with the QT-2.1 toolkit, under the KDE-2 desktop environment, and I thought that I might as well do something useful while I'm screwing around.
Any help on sources of information would be greatly appreciated.
