Rudder ?

A lot of manufacturers have rudders already installed as a "given" on their sea kayaks. Still many others dont include them at all, and still another large group [like the guillemot crowd] cant put a rudder system on without some serious stern reconstruction.
Whats the deal here anyway... is the rudderless crowd really working harder [weather cocking etc] or is it just a matter of same effort..different technique?
