In Response To: busting laminates (lee)

: with all this talk about relative strengths of different layups has anyone
: out there down their own tests and come to any surprising conclusions? Have done, surprises are optional. Some years ago with a friend we tested half a dozen various laminate configurations for a kayak project. To put it shortly: most sensible laminates with carbon in them proved invariably strongest when tested in bending and drop weighted. The lightest single kayak came out at about 14 kg (with carbon) and with mostly glass about 18 kg. This with a touring construction. To get those you must use fabrics (not non-wovens) and preferably epoxy.
