The Double Helix is based on the Razor Billed Auk/Great Auk. Clark and Kurt will be paddling non-stop (aside from calls of nature, switching position, etc.) so they need to be able to sleep in the boat. One person sleeps at a time by lying down in the front cockpit. This placed a lower limit on the width based on the width of Kurt's shoulders. Since most of the time would probably be spent at well below hull speed, the goal was minimum wetted surface area.
Clark felt they wanted to maintain an average of about 5 mph, so the boat is optimized around that speed.
