Christina--

There is no guarantee in life that one boat will meet all your needs. Paddling by yourself and wanting to be protected from the elements is very different from paddling with friends, children and dogs. A boat that is good for 2 or more people is not going to be good when paddling solo. It might be wise to reexamine your program and see if it makes sense to get either a large tripping canoe or a single kayak.
