making changes to existing designs

I have the plans for Applegate boatworks Zydeco 16' piroge, and would like to raise the sides by about 2 inches to give it some additional volume. Would it be necessary to go to heavier plywood and end up with a much heavier boat, or would the 1/4" stuff work as called for in the plans? I live in the middle of the desert, and light weight is important since I have to drive 30+ miles to get to useable water, and would prefer not to have help to get it on and off the truck. Any suggestions out there?
