: So, the presence of other vessels that can save you made you decide to bring
: a VHF.Other vessels' presence may make me change course/speed - they do not make me carry certain gear. I also don't see the VHF as a device "to save" me.
Both of these points are at the core of what I find wrong with how you frame these things. Your views are all about being saved (which I do not expect) and show a very limited view of VHF use (that does not reflect how/why I use mine).
It's a two way radio. I actually carry it mostly because it may allow me to help others. I carry one as a courtesy to everyone else on the water, to be part of the boating community. Boaters carry VHF - I'm a boater.
I'm far more likely to use it to call a tow boat in for a stranded motor boat (without VHF), or to call for help for an injured water skier, than to use it for myself. There are a lot more of those folks on the water.
My most likely use for myself would be to issue a "Securite" call to notify of my presence in busy commercial areas where captains tend not to expect kayaks and may freak out a bit, then misjudge my intentions/speed/heading. It's basically a courtesy call letting them know I'm there - and to just operate normally. I have yet to do this, as the call itself is likely to cause unnecessary disruptions.
Bottom line: VHF simply allows me to be a more responsible part of the on water community.
I usually keep it turned off, and I only recently began wearing it on PFD (as the new one has a perfect pocket). I generally don't need to keep it it on, as I am likely to be unaffected by whatever the chatter is about, or render assistance to the other larger vessels. Any assistance I could render as a kayaker will be to others in close proximity who I can see are in need, and I don't need radio for that.
