Doubles have their good points. If the two paddlers vary greatly in experience, strength, or endurance, a double lets you each work at your own pace and have a conversation while underway. Some people advocate linking the strongest and weakest paddler via a tow to accomplish the same thing, but the tow-ee likely wouldn't feel as good about it.
The thing is, for married couples anyway, is that the one in the back (usually hubby) has his feet on the rudders and picks the heading. The front person has no rudder and and also can't see what partner is doing, and can feel a bit out of control. You know your marital relationship well enough to know if the foregoing is a workable situation for you.
If you're not sure, maybe a couple hours on a tandem bicycle would be instructive. You can't have too many toys, right?
