Amanda, Basswood is native around here and I thougth I would try it on my latest project. I bought some from a local farmer that cuts from his own woods and air drys it for 2 years which is overkill. He uses it for carving carousel figures as a hobby. Basswood is definetely heavier than cedar and probably pine. It is very light colored (blond) with almost no visible grain. It is not brittle like cedar or redwood and you can twist a strip 180 deg. or more without breaking. I used it only for accent strips and where strips take severe twists.I think it is just too blond for a whole boat and the weight is too great. The price was right though. I paid $1 per board foot planed to my desired thickness.
