Kayak and Canoe Design Bulletin Board

I have 2 questions for anyone who can help. My first is anyone used bass wood to strip a kayak and if so what was the overall weight of the boat? A friend of mine told me it is a light hardwood and I thought of trying it. My second question is do you have to plain the boards before you cut them into strips? Any feedback on these question will be greatly appreciated.
