When my brother started kayaking we did just this. He could not believe that design had any bearing on speed and performance. I paddled less than 50% of the time and, you are right, we did get to our destination at the same time.
One of us was smiling and one was not a happy camper!!! Which do you think I was? {:o) (a subtle hint)
Design improvements become more obvious as your skill level increases and I think that the original designers were far better kayakers than we will ever become.
